Every November, the skies over Colorado Springs tell a story, one of courage, innovation, and an unrelenting desire to push beyond the horizon. It’s Aviation History Month, and here at Hotel Polaris, we celebrate not only the history of flight but also the spirit of exploration that defines our city and the U.S. Air Force Academy next door.

As the guiding light for visitors looking to experience the wonder of aviation firsthand, we invite you to follow your own flight path through the museums, programs, and experiences that make Colorado Springs one of the most inspiring aviation destinations in the country.

A City Built for the Skies

Colorado Springs has long been synonymous with flight. It’s home to the U.S. Air Force Academy, where the next generation of Air Force leaders train to reach new heights, and to countless organizations and innovators that keep the city’s aviation spirit alive. From historic aircraft to hands-on simulators, you’ll find that the sky isn’t the limit here, it’s just the beginning.

In the same way that the Academy looks to the stars as its compass, Hotel Polaris serves as the conduit between guests and the vast world of aviation that surrounds us. Our name itself, inspired by the North Star, represents that shared pursuit of discovery and the belief that exploration is part of something bigger than ourselves.

Step Into History at the National Museum of World War II Aviation

One of the best ways to honor Aviation History Month is by visiting the National Museum of World War II Aviation, located right here in Colorado Springs. Recognized as one of the top aviation museums in the nation, it tells the story of the aircraft, pilots, and innovations that helped define the modern era of flight.

This world-class museum features more than 4,000 artifacts and over 30 fully restored aircraft, many of which still take to the skies for flight demonstrations throughout the year. Visitors can explore the hangars, watch live restorations in progress, and gain a deeper understanding of the Air Force’s early roots.

From legendary aircraft like the P-38 Lightning and B-25 Mitchell to the behind-the-scenes engineering that powered the Allied victory, the museum offers an immersive look at the ingenuity and bravery that set the foundation for aviation as we know it today.

Insider Tip: Check the museum’s event calendar in advance. Weekend tours often include guided walk-throughs and opportunities to meet restoration experts who bring these historic aircraft back to life.

Experience Aviation’s Future at Hotel Polaris

While Colorado Springs honors its aviation past, Hotel Polaris invites guests and residents to experience its future.

This November, we’re proud to host The Basics of Flight | Training Program, a four-week after-school course designed for students aged 12–18 who are ready to take their first step into the world of aviation.

The Basics of Flight | Training Program

Dates: Tuesdays, November 4 – December 2, 2025
Time: 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Location: Sully’s Flight Simulator Room, Hotel Polaris

Led by aviation professionals, this interactive program blends classroom learning with hands-on simulator time. Participants will explore the history of flight, the physics of lift and thrust, navigation, aircraft systems, and aviation safety, gaining a complete introduction to the science and skill behind piloting.

The experience culminates with sessions in our state-of-the-art 737 MAX and F-16 flight simulators, where students can test their skills and experience the exhilaration of takeoff — all without leaving the ground.

Much like the Academy itself, this program is about more than just flying. It’s about building confidence, curiosity, and a sense of awe for the world above us.

The Air Force Academy: The Heart of Innovation

No exploration of aviation in Colorado Springs would be complete without acknowledging the U.S. Air Force Academy. Located just minutes from our doors, the Academy represents the intersection of education, service, and forward-thinking innovation.

Visitors can explore the Barry Goldwater Visitor Center and learn through interactive exhibits. On select days, guests can even catch glimpses of training exercises or the precision of flight teams soaring above the Rockies. In addition, the new Hosmer Visitor Center will soon welcome guests, just steps from Hotel Polaris. Named in honor of Lt. Gen. Bradley Hosmer and his wife, Zita, this state-of-the-art facility will offer an immersive look into Academy life and its legacy of service. Designed to resemble an aircraft taking flight, the center will serve as both a gateway to the Academy and a Colorado state welcome center. Its proximity to our hotel makes it the perfect starting point for visitors eager to explore the spirit of innovation and excellence that defines the Academy and our community.

It’s this same spirit of excellence and discovery that inspires our mission at Hotel Polaris to serve as a bridge between the Academy and the public, offering everyone a chance to experience something bigger than themselves.
